Financial Aid Process at OU after filing FAFSA

This page will explain the aid process at OU after you have filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and received your Student Aid Report.

For newly admitted students:

  • First, be sure you have activated your OU email account after you are admitted. OU Financial Aid Services (FAS) will notify you via OU email when we need you to submit missing information or are sending notification of your award(s) called the OU-FAN (Financial Aid notification). FAS may also revise your awards or have important information to share regarding your financial aid. Go to exchange.ou.edu to activate your OU email if you have not already done so.
  • Be sure to regularly check your OU email. Financial Aid Services recommends that you do not forward your email to another email provider as you may miss out on important information and/or lose financial aid funding.
  • Go to My OU Financial Aid to review your financial aid information online.
  • Use Ask the Sooners to find answers to your most frequently asked questions about financial aid, billing and payment issues at OU.
  • Remember - do not share your OU Login and password with anyone!
For all students:

  • Verify you released your FAFSA information to OU Financial Aid Services. Title IV School Code 003184 is listed on your SAR.
  • Check your OU email regularly or log into oZONE My OU Financial Aid.
  • Check your financial aid status approximately 3-5 days after receiving your SAR.
  • Submit any missing information requested as quickly as possible.
  • Financial aid processing times very depending on the type of application request (such as FAFSA or PLUS Loan). Typically processing times range from up to 4-6 weeks during non-peak to 6-8 weeks during peak (June-September and January-March). Check current processing times in Ask the Sooners.
  • When financial aid is awarded, an email is sent to the student. The awards are available for review by logging in to the oZONE (My OU Financial Aid).
  • Decide what type(s) of financial aid to accept, reduce or decline and submit online using the OU-FAN (Financial Aid Notification).
  • If you accept a federal student loan and are a first time borrower, you will be required to complete a Master Promissory note (MPN), which is your promise to repay the loan. Information will follow via email several days after submitting the OU-FAN.
  • First-time borrowers are also required to complete Online Entrance Counseling BEFORE the loan will be disbursed to you.
  • Disbursement of financial aid occurs through the Office of the Bursar.
  • All financial aid recipients are required to make satisfactory academic progress as defined by Financial Aid Services. These links are included in My OU Financial Aid.
